Great Finds: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons

The other day I was looking through my local Goodwill store and came across the game Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for the Intellivision complete in the box.

It came with the game, Instruction booklet, and the controller overlays. The box is dinged up a bit but its still in one piece and everything else is in pretty good shape. I only paid $1 for this game and I just felt that I couldn't turn this up it may not been the best game and its pretty hard at least it came with an instruction booklet so I or whoever plays this game can read the instructions on how to play this game and maybe even beat this game.

Game of the Day: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Today's game of the day is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night first came out on the PlayStation. When the Xbox 360 came out they released it for download on the Xbox Live Arcade. The version on the Xbox Live Arcade has enhanced graphics in HD and it doesn't have load times. You can also unlock Castlevania: SOTN on the PSP game Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. Castlevania: SOTN start right after Castlevania: Dracula X (a.k.a Castlevania: Rondo of Blood). It starts off with Richter Belmont defeating Dracula. Then after that you find out that Richter has vanished. Then it talks about Alucard the son of Dracula he awakens to vanquish the evil. After the quick briefing you take control of Alucard and the action never stops. This game uses a non-linear style of game play (kind of like Super Mertoid) and most of the modern Castlevania games followed this style of game play unlike most of the original Castlevania games that used a linear style of game play. This game also adds some RPG elements such as: leveling up, equipping weapons and armor, learning spells, and some other goodies. Castlevania: SOTN is of the best Castlevania games every made with tons of twists and turns and an awesome soundtrack fans of action games and RPG's would like this game. This original game on the PlayStation is selling on average no cheaper then $20 and that's the greatest hit label if you want the Black label game it will run you about $50 or more it depends on condition of the game. You can always download it on the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 MS points ($10). If you are a fan of the Castlevania series this is a must own. Even if you aren't a fan or have never gotten into Castlevania this is a must own. Whether you have it on PlayStation, Downloaded the game on the Xbox Live Arcade, or even unlocked in on the PSP game Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles this game is awesome. Most people say this is the best Castlevania in the series and it's one of my most favorite games in the series and over all.

Console Flops: Atari 5200

We all know the name Atari and the first thing that comes to mind is the Atari 2600. The Atari 2600 was an awesome console the revolutionized home gaming. As the years went by Atari released other consoles. The next console was the Atari 5200 and it was a very bad console. This console came and went and was notorious for the controls not working. They released the Atari 7800 which was a better console because it was backwards compatible and played Atari 2600 games and you could also use the Atari 2600 controls with the Atari 7800. The Atari 5200 could have been a good console but it was not made well at all and they tried to do different hi-tech things with this console that weren't hi-tech at all it was nothing but a pain in the butt. The Angry Video Game Nerd did a review on the Atari 5200 and if you would like to see his experience with the Atari 5200 you can watch his video below. Game of the Day: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Today's game of the day is New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

This game is a must own for the Wii. It brings you an old school style Mario game play with a new school feel. This games is tons of fun with its 4 player action. Never have we had a Mario game of this style that has had multiplayer action. For the first time every one can play at the same time no more taking turns and making your friend play all the levels you don't want to play. This is a team effort or you can be mean and kill your friends all, but you can't advance when you are playing together. If you want to compete you can play Free-For-All or Coin Battle. In Free-For-All its a race to the finish the first to finish wins and if everyone dies then everyone loses. In Coin Battle you battle to get the most coins and if everyone dies before the end the winner is the one who has collected the most coins by then. This game brings Bowser's kids from Super Mario Bros. 3 and it also includes Bowser's newest edition Bowser Jr. It also has Yoshi in the game so you get to use Yoshi as well just like in Super Mario World. This game really is a cross between Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. It has the worlds like Super Mario Bros. 3 and some of the gameplay from Super Mario World. If you do not own this game for the Wii you need to go and get it now its that good.

Game of the Day: Castle Crashers

Today's game of the day is Castle Crashers.

This game is available on the Xbox 360 and you can get it by downloading it from the Xbox Live Marketplace. When I first downloaded the trail of this game a little simple beat um up game. When I decided to download the full game I quickly realized that this game wasn't just a simple beat um up game. You can pick one of the 4 knights and which ever on you pick has its own weapon and magic and you can also level up your characters and get better weapons. Each knight has their own elemental magic: Red = Lightning, Green = Poison, Orange = Fire, and Blue = Ice. Other then that there isn't much of a difference between the characters. You do have the power to level them up any way you want. One of the knights you could make more strength based, another could be defense based. another could be magic based, or another could be agility based. No matter how you build your characters you will have so much fun playing this game. This game also offers 4 player multiplayer local or online through Xbox Live (must have a gold membership to play on Xbox Live). You can also unlock more characters I've unlocked 3 characters so far and I'm not sure how many more there are to unlock. Either way this game is awesome and it is a must buy and download. You can download this game for 1200 MS points ($15) or if you are lucky like me and you have a Xbox Live Gold sometimes they will run deals on Xbox Live Arcade titles. This game is totally worth the 1200 MS points. So if you want a game that is tons of fun to play singleplayer or multiplayer you need to download this game. If you would like to try or buy this game you can download this game by logging into your Xbox Live account on your Xbox 360 or you can click on the link below to get more info on the game and to download the game.

Swordquest: A True Adventure Game

Swordquest was one of the first adventure video games ever made. Swordquest was to be split into 4 games: Earthworld, Fireworld, Waterworld, and Airworld.

Earthworld Fireworld
Waterworld Airworld

But these games we more then just games. When you put these games into you Atari you had a chance to win up to $150,000 in prizes. Keep in mind this games came out in the early 1980s and that was a very big deal. The reason this was a big deal was that contests involving video games were very rare in the 1980s. Anyone who played this games had a change to win big prizes and they was huge. Each game would have a winner and they would each receive a prize valued at $25,000 each. Those 4 winners would each compete for a sword that was valued at $50,000 all together that was $150,000 in prizes. Unfortunately the video game crash of 1983 happened and the contest was never finish then Atari went bankrupt and had to sell the company so the contest for Waterworld never happened and they canceled Airworld. So they couldn't have a final round and they final remains prizes were never awarded. It's a shame that something so epic with video games couldn't be finished. I learn about this when I was watching the Anger Video Game Nerd's review of Swordquest. The video below is his review and he goes into more detail about the games and the contest. This video contains explicit content and language viewer discretion is advised.

The Swordquest needs to be completed.

My Top 10 SNES Games/Game Series

In my opinion these are some of the best games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System

10. Super Mario All-Stars - this is pretty much a port of all the Super Mario's from the NES, but this one includes Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels which is the actually sequel to the first Super Mario Bros. This is a nice game it has all the Super Mario Games on one cartridge and the games have been given amped up graphics and a save feature, but the games never lose their old school feel.

9. Super Mario Kart - The first Mario kart game which is an awesome game that has never slowed the fun down since the Mario kart games have been

8. Donkey Kong Country - This is such an awesome Donkey Kong game. The first one introduces Diddy Kong. Then the 2nd game came along and introduced Dixie Kong and just like Donkey Kong Jr. you have to rescue Donkey Kong. In the 3rd game you are introduced to Kiddy Kong this time you have to search of Donkey and Diddy Kong who have who have gone missing and just like Donkey Kong 3 it strays from the series but this time only in difficulty its a lot harder then the first 2.

7. Mega Man X - a solid series that started on the SNES. Everyone thought this was Mega Man 10 until Mega Man X2 Came out then we learned that this was a different Mega Man.

6. Super Metroid - This is the best Metroid game every made.

5. Chrono Trigger - This is another awesome RPG made by Squaresoft (now Square Enix) this is a hard game to find cheep for SNES but it has been re-released on the Nintendo DS and I don't think its changed much and Nintendo my re-release it again on the Wii Virtural Console.

4. Super Castlevania IV - This is one of my most favorite Castlevania games. It's pretty much a remake of the first Castlevania on the NES, but the game is very different the controls are the best in any vintage Castlevania game and the best part is you can whip in any direction.

3. Super Mario World - The first game I every played on the SNES and my favorite vintage Super Mario game in the series (not including Super Mario RPG).

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - This is probably the best Zelda game ever it takes everything from the Legend of Zelda on the NES and amps it up with better graphics, more equipment, and more puzzles.

1. Super Mario RPG - This is one of my favorite turn based RPGs and this is the game the got me really into RPGs.

There are many other great games for the SNES. A few games that are on the bubble for me: Stunt Race FX, Tecmo Super Bowl , Final Fantasy II & Final Fantasy III (a.k.a. Final Fantasy IV & Final Fantasy VI which I own on the GBA), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, Star Fox, E.V.O.: Search for Eden and Super Bomberman. There were many great games on the SNES that are not listed but it is hard to make a top ten list where there are so many great games out there. There was also the Super Gameboy. When that came out it was the first time you could play Gameboy games in color and the best thing about that is you could select the color. They also released Super gameboy packaged games which has set colors for the game and if the game was a two player game you could play two players with the Super Game Boy and that worked great with fighting games on the Game Boy. The only thing I didn't like was that it wasn't full screen, but that was okay because the super game boy was awesome. The SNES is a great system that will lives on side by side with the NES.

Game of the Day: Borderlands

Today's game of the day is Borderlands.

This game came out October 20, 2009 (October 26, 2009 on the PC). This game is awesome. All the fans of Diablo 2 have been waiting for Diablo 3 and Borderlands comes out to satisfy the fans. This game is a Mix between Diablo 2 and Call of Duty. It plays like a Diablo style RPG the only difference is that is a first person shooter. With a very long list of guns this game is just plane fun. It has 4 different character classes: the Hunter, the Solder, the Siren, and the Berserker. Either one of these classes are fun to play with. The choice of character all depends on the player. I picked the Hunter to start with I though it would be fun to start with a sniper and it is. They have also released DLC's for this game to keep the fun going. Once you beat the game you can play through the game 2nd time with harder enemies. This game also has great online multi-player you can play with 3 others online. The great thing online play is that whenever you are someone else pick up money everyone gets the same amount of money so there is no fighting over money. The same doesn't applies for weapons and ammo. Most of the time I have played with people who are nice enough tell everyone about the weapons and see who wants the weapons. 2k games made this game very well and again they came out of the blue with the game and made a hit. It just like when the released Bioshock no one new too much about it but once the word spread that this game was amazing the game sold very fast just like Borderlands. It doesn't matter which system you have Xbox 360, PS3, or PC if you don't own this game I would suggest you buy it.

Game of the Day: The Legend of Zelda

Today the game of the day is The Legend of Zelda on the NES.

As I said before this is my favorite NES game ever. This is the first time we met Link, Zelda, and Gannon. It was the first true adventure game I ever played. You set out as Link to retrieve the Triforce, defeat Gannon, and rescue Zelda. There are so many secrets and lucky for us they filled the games with hits to help us with our progress. Back in the day we would use Nintendo Power to help us find all the secrets. We would also come across new secrets by accident and then tell all our friend and they would also spread the word. The first secret I came across was when I typed in Zelda when I started a new game and discovered the 2nd quest. Today we still have strategy guides and we can also look online and find all the maps and secrets. The Legend of Zelda is never ending fun with a very high replay value. If you have this game on NES never get rid of it and if you don't have an NES anymore you can also download this classic game on the Wii virtual console for 500 Wii points.

2nd Red Ring of Death Resolved

February 22, 2010 I received my 2nd Red Ring of Death on my 2nd Xbox 360 and I shipped it for repair February 23, 2010. A few days after I shipped the console I received a notice that they received the console. Then a few days later I received another notice saying the repair was complete and they sent my console back to me. Today March 5, 2010 I received my replacement Xbox 360. They said it could take 2 -3 weeks to get your Xbox 360 back from the day you shipped it. It has been about a week and a half and I have received my Xbox 360. I also received a 1 month Xbox Live Gold card for free. It took half the time to get my console and I got a free month of Xbox Live. I have to say Microsoft is getting good at this making sure gamers that are without their Xbox 360 aren't without it for very long. Hopefully this will be the last time this happens to me and hopefully they resolve these issues once and for all.

My Top 10 NES Games/Game Series

In my opinion these are some of the best games for the Nintendo Entertainment System

10. Metroid - A great game with a surprise at the end who knew Samus was a girl.

9. Donkey Kong - A great game that introduced us to 2 now very popular characters Donkey Kong and Mario (a.k.a Jump Man). The sequel introduced us to Donkey Kong Jr. who appeared in Super Mario Kart on the SNES and a couple of other games. Donkey Kong 3 is fun but it's totally different then the first two games.

8. Mike Tyson's Punch Out - One of the best boxing games ever made.

7. Double Dragon - I love 1 and 2. I'm not too big a fan of 3 because its very hard. In my opinion its harder then games like Contra and Ninja Gaidan and we all know those games are very hard.

6. Kid Icarus - This game is one of the first games I owned and I love this game.

5. Kirby's Adventure - You gotta love the pink ball of puff. This is one of the best Kirby games ever.

4. Super Mario Bros. - 3 is the best followed by 1 then 2 they are all great games.

3. Mega Man - 2 & 3 are my most favorite all the other Mega Man games are good as well.

2. Castlevania - 1 and 3 are awesome. Castlevania 2 is good but not as good as 1 and 3.

1. The Legend of Zelda - Best NES game ever.

They are many other games on the NES that are great. On the bubble for me: Contra, Final Fantasy (I own this on the GBA and I Prefer the GBA version to the NES version), Ducktales, Ninja Gaidan, Battletoads, Battletoads/Double Dragon, and Dr. Mario. I could list some more but I wouldn't be able to end this post if i didn't stop now. The NES is one of the best gaming systems ever and will live on forever.

Great Finds: A Boy and His Blob

A few days ago I was at a used bookstore called Edward McKay. This bookstore also sells used video games and also used vintage video games. I was looking around at there games and came across an NES game in the box with everything included. The game was A boy and his blob a great game for the NES.

This game had everything including the Styrofoam block at the bottom at the box. I picked this game up for $9 and was very excited to get this game that cheep in the box complete with everything. As a kid I usually would do what anyone would do I would threw the box out. Who knew they would be collector items.

I also have the Boxes for Double Dragon 1 and 2 but I only have the boxes and games and the boxes aren't in very good shape.

Even though the boxes aren't in great shape they still hold some value. I picked these games at a yard sale in 1996 for $2 each so I can't really complain. A word of advise don't throw your game boxes out if you still have them.
